Standardizing Training
3D Technical Design (3DTD) is a practitioner-led consultancy that serves public and private sector organizations across the UKs District Energy industry. 3DTD specializes in designing, building, installing, operating and maintaining many of the UKs largest city-centre district energy schemes. 3DTDs niche practice specializes in supplying specialist CAD design and technical services to the Heat Network sector. The practice is unique to the industry due to the lack of formalized training available in university civil, structural, mechanical, and survey engineer programs. The 3DTD principals are experts in the field and have documented the process for over 10 years.

3DTD has encountered significant challenges in providing guidance to engineers on the process due to the lack of standardization in this developing industry. Developing a training process presents challenges in the following areas:
- Documentation: 3DTD process documentation was captured in an extensive library of PDF files requiring frequent updates as the process evolves.
- Training costs: Training costs were high because it required a 2 -3 month training period that utilized a hands-on approach with an engineer providing in-person, one-on-one training (sometimes with multiple trainees).
- Lack of efficiency: When trainers are training multiple employees the process is very inefficient because the trainer has to walk through each step with each person. So, after the first person has been trained on the step they wait for the trainer to show the others before they can move on to the next step.
Addressing these challenges was crucial to the success of 3DTD and their plans to expand their business by opening an office in Bangkok and increasing their staff.
The Solution: Learnie’s Microlearning App
In collaboration with 3DTDs team, Learnie designed a comprehensive training program to tackle the challenge at hand. The solution involved:
- Structured content planning: The team used Learnies content planning and scheduling to tool organize the process documentation into microlessons and courses.
- Flexibility: The organization and accessibility of content provides flexibility needed for frequent updates.
- On-demand training: Designers can work remotely to learn the processes from screen recordings on the desktop app.
The Outcome: Standardization and Scalability
Learnie’s technology played a significant role in 3DTDs ability to scale their business and expand on an international level. Converting the process documentation to microlessons that can be easily updated facilitates the standardization of training content. Furthermore, the efficiency of the training process was improved significantly with remote access to microlessons.
“Our company has recently undergone rapid growth, and, as such, a need arose to streamline our training. Learnie has helped us to meet that need by the use of training videos as it is user-friendly, and enables us to simply add to or edit any necessary information inside the videos we create. All our new employees can watch the videos as many times as it takes to understand the particular aspect of the job, whilst keeping experienced staff free to perform their regular responsibilities, thereby saving precious time and resources. Having the videos broken up into multiple 30-second bursts make it much easier to follow our processes step-by-step, which allows the users to review the individual steps as and when needed. Should any of our processes change, it is very simple to update the few bursts that cover it, rather than having to recreate an entire video.”
